Description

These Bat Cupcakes are a spooky and delicious Halloween treat featuring moist chocolate cupcakes topped with rich chocolate buttercream frosting and decorated with Oreo cookie wings and candy eyes to create adorable bat faces.

Ingredients

Scale

Cupcakes

  • 1 box Chocolate Cake Mix
  • 3 Eggs
  • 1/2 cup Vegetable Oil
  • 1 cup Water

Frosting

  • 1 cup Butter, softened
  • 3 cup Powdered Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Cocoa Powder

Decorations

  • 24 Oreo Cookies, divided
  • 24 Oreo Mini Cookies
  • 24 Candy Eyes

Instructions

  1. Prepare Cupcake Batter: Follow the cake mix instructions on your box: combine the cake mix with water, vegetable oil, and eggs in a large bowl. Beat the mixture until well combined and smooth.
  2. Bake Cupcakes: Line 24-cup cupcake pans with paper liners. Pour the batter evenly into each cup. Bake as directed on the cake mix box, typically around 16 minutes at 350°F. Remove from oven when a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  3. Cool Cupcakes: Allow the baked cupcakes to cool completely on a wire rack before frosting to prevent melting of the frosting.
  4. Make Chocolate Buttercream Frosting: In a mixing bowl, cream 1 cup softened butter until fluffy. Gradually add 3 cups powdered sugar while beating continuously. Then add 1/2 cup cocoa powder gradually, beating until smooth and creamy.
  5. Prepare Oreo Wings: Carefully cut 24 Oreo cookies in half to create bat wings. Set aside. Crush the remaining whole Oreo cookies finely using a food processor or by placing them in a bag and crushing with a rolling pin.
  6. Frost Cupcakes: Spread or pipe a generous amount of chocolate buttercream on each cooled cupcake. Roll the frosted cupcakes gently in the crushed Oreo crumbs to coat the frosting evenly.
  7. Decorate Cupcakes: Stick two Oreo halves into the frosting on opposite sides of each cupcake to form bat wings. Press one Oreo Mini cookie just in front of the wings on the frosting to form the bat’s head. Finally, attach two candy eyes onto the mini Oreo to complete the bat face.

Notes

  • For the best flavor and texture, make the chocolate buttercream frosting from scratch instead of using store-bought frosting.
  • You can substitute semi-sweet or dark chocolate cake mix depending on your preference.
  • Ensure cupcakes are fully cooled before frosting to avoid melting or sliding of frosting.
  • If you don’t have a food processor, place Oreos in a sealed plastic bag and crush them with a rolling pin to get fine crumbs.
  • Use a piping bag or a spatula to frost cupcakes neatly.
  • These cupcakes are perfect for Halloween parties and kid-friendly gatherings.
