Description

Ooey Gooey Butter Cake is a rich, dense dessert featuring a buttery yellow cake base topped with a sweet, creamy cream cheese filling. This indulgent treat is perfect for gatherings and satisfies any sweet tooth with its moist texture and gooey center.

Ingredients

Scale

Cake

  • 1 package yellow cake mix
  • 2 eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup (113g) butter, melted

Filling

  • 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, room temperature
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup (113g) butter, melted
  • 4 cups confectioners sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: Heat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit or set convection oven to 325°F for more even baking.
  2. Prepare cake base: In a bowl, combine the yellow cake mix, 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and melted butter. Mash together with a fork until fully incorporated into a smooth batter.
  3. Prepare baking pan: Spray a 9-inch by 3-inch round cake pan or a 9-inch by 13-inch pan with baking spray or line the bottom with parchment paper for easy removal.
  4. Form cake layer: Press the cake mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared pan and flatten as much as possible to create a uniform base.
  5. Make cream cheese filling: Place cream cheese, the remaining 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon vanilla, and melted butter in a stand mixer. Beat on medium speed until creamy and smooth.
  6. Add sugar to filling: Gradually add the confectioners sugar one cup at a time on low speed, mixing fully before adding more, until all sugar is incorporated into a thick, sweet filling.
  7. Combine and bake: Pour the cream cheese mixture over the prepared cake base evenly. Bake for 45 minutes, or until the edges are brown and the center is still slightly jiggly to avoid overcooking.
  8. Cool before serving: Allow the cake to cool completely before slicing and serving to achieve the ideal gooey texture.

Notes

  • Using room temperature eggs and cream cheese ensures better mixing and smooth texture.
  • You can use a 9×13 inch pan for a thinner layer and faster baking time if preferred.
  • To prevent sticking, make sure to grease or line the pan well.
  • A jiggle in the center when done baking is normal and results in the desired gooey consistency.
  • Store leftovers covered at room temperature or in the fridge for up to 3 days.
