Description

A flavorful and classic Old Bay Shrimp Boil featuring jumbo shrimp, smoked sausage, corn, and potatoes cooked in a seasoned broth and served with a garlic butter sauce.

Ingredients

Scale

Seafood and Meat

  • 2 pounds large jumbo shrimp peeled and deveined, tails on
  • 1 pound smoked sausage kielbasa or andouille, cut into 1 inch pieces

Vegetables and Fruits

  • 4 ears corn, each cut into 4 pieces
  • 1 pound small red potatoes, cut in half
  • 1 medium onion, cleaned and cut into large pieces
  • 4 lemons: 2 for cooking, 2 for serving
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, plus more for garnish, chopped

Seasonings and Butter

  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 4 cloves garlic, cleaned and smashed
  • ⅓ cup seafood seasoning (like Old Bay)
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the boiling water: Fill a large pot with water. Quarter two lemons and add them to the water along with the onion, smashed garlic cloves, and seafood seasoning. Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat.
  2. Cook potatoes: Add the halved potatoes to the boiling water and cook for 12 minutes or until just barely fork tender.
  3. Add corn and sausage: Add the cut corn and smoked sausage pieces to the pot. Continue cooking for an additional 6 minutes until corn is tender and sausage is heated through.
  4. Cook shrimp: Add the peeled shrimp to the boiling water and cook for 3 minutes or until the shrimp turn pink and are cooked through.
  5. Drain and transfer: Drain the water and transfer the shrimp mixture onto a large baking sheet to hold.
  6. Prepare garlic butter sauce: In a microwave-safe bowl, melt the unsalted butter. Whisk in salt, black pepper, and 2 tablespoons of the chopped parsley until combined.
  7. Coat the shrimp boil: Pour half of the garlic butter mixture over the shrimp boil on the baking sheet and stir gently to coat the ingredients evenly.
  8. Garnish and season: Garnish with additional chopped parsley and lemon wedges. Sprinkle more seafood seasoning to taste if desired.
  9. Serve: Serve immediately with the reserved garlic butter sauce on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • Use peeled and deveined jumbo shrimp with tails on for best presentation and ease of eating.
  • Smoked sausage varieties like andouille or kielbasa add great flavor; feel free to substitute with other smoked sausages if preferred.
  • Cook potatoes just until fork tender to avoid overcooking during subsequent steps.
  • Reserve half the garlic butter sauce for serving to keep the boil moist and flavorful while eating.
  • Additional Old Bay seasoning can be sprinkled at the end for extra spice and flavor.
  • Serve the shrimp boil with crusty bread or coleslaw for a complete meal.
