Ingredients

Units Scale

Batter

  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk plus 2 tablespoons, if needed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

For Frying and Garnish

  • Vegetable or canola oil for frying (about 3 inches deep)
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Wet Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together 1 large egg, ½ cup milk, and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract until smooth and well combined.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a separate bowl, combine 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 2 tablespoons granulated sugar, and ¼ teaspoon salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients while stirring until the batter is smooth and pourable. If too thick, add up to 2 additional tablespoons of milk, one at a time, until the desired consistency is reached.
  3. Prepare for Frying: Pour the batter into a piping bag fitted with a small round tip or a squeeze bottle for controlled piping. Heat about 3 inches of vegetable or canola oil in a deep pan or Dutch oven over medium-high heat until it reaches 340°F–350°F (170°C–175°C), using a thermometer to maintain the temperature.
  4. Fry the Funnel Cake Fries: Pipe 3–4 strips of batter, approximately 5–6 inches long, directly into the hot oil. Fry for 2–3 minutes on one side until golden brown, then flip and cook for an additional 2–3 minutes until equally golden and crispy.
  5. Drain Excess Oil: Use a slotted spoon or tongs to transfer the fried funnel cake fries to a plate lined with paper towels to absorb excess oil. Repeat the frying process with the remaining batter, monitoring and adjusting oil temperature to maintain consistent frying conditions.
  6. Finish and Serve: Once all fries are fried, dust them generously with powdered sugar. Serve immediately while warm and crispy for the best experience.

Notes

  • Ensure the oil temperature stays consistent between 340°F and 350°F for optimal crispiness without burning.
  • If you don’t have a piping bag, a plastic squeeze bottle or a zip-top bag with a small corner cut off will work for piping the batter.
  • Use a thermometer to monitor oil temperature for consistent frying results and safety.
  • Serve the fries fresh; they are best enjoyed hot to preserve their crispy texture.
  • Can substitute milk with almond milk or other milk alternatives if desired.
