Instructions
- Prepare Pan: Spray a 9×9-inch pan with non-stick spray and line it with a foil or parchment paper sling. Spray the lining again to ensure easy removal of treats later.
- Brown Butter: Place a large pot over medium heat, add the butter, and melt it while stirring gently. Continue cooking until the butter begins to foam, sizzle, and small brown flecks appear on the bottom, indicating it is browned. Remove from heat promptly to prevent burning.
- Melt Marshmallows: Add sea salt and 8 cups of mini marshmallows to the browned butter off the heat. Stir until melted and smooth. If needed, return the pot to low heat briefly to finish melting the marshmallows, avoiding burning the butter.
- Add Vanilla: Stir in the vanilla extract into the melted mixture until well combined.
- Mix with Cereal: Pour the melted marshmallow mixture over the Rice Krispies cereal in a large bowl and mix thoroughly to coat all the cereal evenly.
- Add Remaining Marshmallows: While still warm, fold in the remaining 2 cups of mini marshmallows to the mixture.
- Layer in Pan: Lightly press about half of the Rice Krispies mixture into the prepared pan, flattening it evenly. Then spread the dulce de leche evenly over the pressed layer.
- Top Layer: Add the remaining Rice Krispies mixture over the dulce de leche and press gently with a buttered spoon to evenly spread and compact the top layer.
- Set and Cool: Allow the treats to set at room temperature until fully cooled and firm, about 30 to 60 minutes.
Notes
- For cinnamon sugar Rice Krispies, if unavailable, stir ¼ to 1/3 cup cinnamon sugar into plain Rice Krispies before mixing with marshmallow.
- To brown butter properly, use a light-colored pan and watch for foam and brown flecks; remove immediately to avoid burning.
- Use a spoon lightly coated with butter to press the mixture into the pan to avoid sticking to your hands.
- Store treats in an airtight container at room temperature for 2-3 days or freeze for up to 6 weeks.
