Description

Bloody Eyeballs are a spooky and delicious dessert featuring blueberry-stuffed longans served in a vibrant mixed berry sauce. Perfect for Halloween or themed parties, this recipe combines the juicy sweetness of longan fruit with tart blueberries and a rich berry puree for a visually striking and tasty treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Fruit

  • 2 pounds longan fruit
  • 1 pint blueberries

Berry Sauce

  • 1/2 pound frozen mixed berries (such as Trader Joe’s Very Cherry Frozen Berry Blend)

Instructions

  1. Peel the Longans: Remove the skin from the longans, starting at the stem end to make peeling easier.
  2. Deseed: Halve each longan to expose the large seed in the center and carefully remove the inedible seed.
  3. Stuff with Blueberries: Place one blueberry inside the cavity of each halved longan piece, making a blueberry-stuffed ‘eyeball.’
  4. Prepare Berry Puree: Blitz half a bag of frozen mixed berries in a blender or food processor until smooth to create the ‘bloody’ berry sauce.
  5. Plate and Serve: Spoon the berry puree onto serving plates and arrange the blueberry-stuffed longans on top to resemble bloody eyeballs for a dramatic effect.

Notes

  • Longans can be tricky to peel; start at the stem end and gently work your way around the skin for easier removal.
  • If fresh longans are unavailable, fresh lychees can be used as a substitute.
  • Use fresh blueberries for stuffing to maintain a firm texture inside the longans.
  • The berry sauce can be strained if you prefer a smoother texture without seeds.
  • This dessert is best served chilled or at room temperature.
